Quick note: I always recommend checking vacation rental availability early — especially for spring break, summer, and SandFest when the best homes book months ahead.

If you ask me one of my favorite simple things to do in Port Aransas, it’s to go watch the sunset somewhere on Mustang Island. Some of the best sunset spots in Port Aransas can be found in the simplest spots, beachfront and waterfront.
No tickets, no reservations, no planning required. Just find a good spot, sit for a bit, and watch the sky change colors. Port A sunsets tend to be especially beautiful because you’re surrounded by water — the Gulf on one side and the bay and ship channel on the other.
Some of the best sunset spots in Port Aransas include Roberts Point Park, Mustang Island State Park, Horace Caldwell Pier, the South Jetty, and the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center. These locations offer wide views of the Gulf, ship channel, and coastal wetlands where the sky lights up with color in the evening.
Over the years I’ve ended a lot of beach days watching the sun go down in Port Aransas, and these are the best places I’d tell a friend to go.

Don’t pack without this list…
If you’re even slightly worried about forgetting something — I made this for YOU. It’s the exact list I use and recommend to friends visiting for the first time. No overpacking. No last-minute Walmart runs for things you forgot.

1. Roberts Point Park

If you want the classic Port Aransas sunset, this is the spot.
Roberts Point Park sits right on the Corpus Christi Ship Channel, and in the evening the sun drops behind the harbor and marina. Cargo ships, shrimp boats, pelicans, and sometimes dolphins all pass through while the golden sky lights up.
The park covers about 50 acres along the waterfront and has walking paths, fishing areas, and a two-story observation tower with wide views of the channel.
What makes sunsets from here special is the movement. You might see:
- dolphins swimming near the bulkhead
- huge ships gliding through the channel
- fishing boats returning for the evening
Spring and fall tend to have the most colorful skies, but this spot is good year-round. If you’re visiting with kids, the Turtle Cove playground makes it easy to stay awhile.

2. Horace Caldwell Pier

Most people think of the pier for sunrise, but sunset here can be just as pretty.
Standing out over the Gulf gives you a wide open horizon and you can watch the light reflect across the waves. This is a good option if you want a simple beach walk followed by sunset, like I mention in my 3 Days in Port Aransas: A Simple Itinerary for First-Time Visitors.
Best time of year for the sunset here: Late summer and early fall when the air is clear and the water reflects the sunset colors.
If you’re already nearby, you can check beach conditions first on the Port Aransas Live Webcams page before heading out.

3. South Jetty

The South Jetty is one of those places locals quietly love.
You get views of the open Gulf, the ship channel, and the waves rolling back and forth on the beach. When the sun starts dropping behind the channel, the rocks and water pick up golden light and everything slows down.
Best seasons to watch the sunset here: Spring and fall when the weather is mild enough to sit out on the jetty comfortably.
You’ll often see people fishing here right up until sunset.

4. Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center
If you want a quieter sunset, this is a good choice. The boardwalk trails of the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center stretch out over the marsh and wetlands, and in the evening the sky reflects across the water.
You’ll usually see birds settling in for the night, and occasionally alligators in the marsh below.
Best time of year for sunsets here: Winter and spring when bird migration is active.
It’s also one of the most peaceful spots on the island, a true hidden gem.

5. Charlie’s Pasture

The Port Aransas Nature Preserve at Charlie’s Pasture is one of the most underrated sunset spots in Port A.
The walking trail in this area winds through coastal prairie and wetlands, and eventually opens up to wide views of the bay. It feels a little more like nature and a little less like town.
Best seasons here: Spring and fall when the breeze is cooler and the skies tend to be clearer.

LOCAL TIP: Bring some good bug spray and extra water if you walk the trail near sunset.
6. Mustang Island State Park
If you want a wide open beach sunset, this is the place.
Mustang Island State Park has miles of undeveloped shoreline, so sunsets feel bigger and quieter than in town. You can sit in the sand, walk the shoreline, or just watch the waves roll in while the sun drops toward the horizon.
Best time of year: Fall and winter often bring the clearest skies and most dramatic sunsets.
