One of the many questions I get asked by friends is: “Where should we stay in Port Aransas?”
And honestly, it’s a good question—because where you stay in Port A can really shape your trip. Some areas are walkable to restaurants and shops. Some are right by beach access roads. Others are quieter and better for families who want space and pools.
Since we own a home here, I rarely stay in hotels or rentals myself. But after many years of visiting (and plenty of friends asking where they should book), I’ve learned which areas of town work best depending on the kind of trip you’re planning.
If you understand how Port Aransas is laid out, it becomes much easier to choose the right place to stay. Here’s the simple breakdown I usually give friends.
Know How Port Aransas is Laid Out
Port Aransas sits on Mustang Island, with the Gulf on one side and the Corpus Christi Ship Channel on the other.
The main road through town is Highway 361, which runs north to south through most of the island. Nearly everything visitors need—restaurants, coffee shops, beach access roads, and vacation rentals—is located somewhere along this highway corridor.
Most beach access roads branch off from Highway 361 and lead directly to the sand. In general, the city breaks down like this:
North End / Old Town Port Aransas
- Close to restaurants, shops, the marina, and nightlife
- Near the pier, park and ferry
- Short drive to beach access roads
Central Port Aransas
- Lots of condo complexes and vacation rentals
- Easy beach access
- Popular with families
South End / Newer Communities
- Resort-style developments
- Planned neighborhoods with pools and amenities
- A little farther from restaurants and center of town
The good news is Port Aransas is a small town, so even if you stay on one end, most places are only about a 10–15 minute drive away.
Best Areas to Stay in Town
Staying in “Old Town” (best for walkability)
If you like the idea of being able to walk to restaurants, bars, coffee shops, or the marina, staying in the main part of town is a great choice.
This area centers around:
- Alister Street
- Beach Street
- The marina and harbor
- Many of the town’s most popular restaurants
You’ll find a mix of small hotels, condos, and vacation rentals tucked throughout these neighborhoods.
Why visitors like this area
The biggest advantage in the Old Town area of Port A is convenience. After a day at the beach, you can often walk or take a quick golf cart ride to dinner rather than driving around town. It’s also the best area if you plan to:
- book a fishing charter
- go on a dolphin watching tour
- explore local shops
- enjoy Port Aransas nightlife
The trade-off is that most short-term rentals here are not directly on the beach. You’ll usually drive or take a golf cart to one of the nearby beach access roads. For a lot of visitors, that’s not a big deal since the beach is only a few minutes away.

Beach Street to Sandcastle Drive / Beachfront Condo Area

If you’ve ever searched online for Port Aransas beachfront condos, there’s a good chance you’ve seen properties along the coast between Beach Street and Sandcastle Drive. This stretch of Mustang Island is lined with condo complexes that sit very close to the beach, many with direct boardwalk access over the sand dunes.
Because of that, it’s one of the most popular areas for visitors who want quick and easy beach time.
Why families love this area
Many condos in this area offer things that make beach trips much easier, like:
- swimming pools
- private balconies and water views
- elevators (helpful for hauling beach gear)
- boardwalks straight to the sand
Being able to walk from your condo to the beach is especially helpful if you’re traveling with young kids, coolers, umbrellas, or wagons full of beach gear.
Another advantage is that many complexes sit close to multiple beach access roads, so you can still drive onto the beach if you prefer. Even though you’re near the beach, restaurants and shops are usually just a 5–10 minute drive away.
To be sure you’re prepared and bring what you need, take a look at the Port A beach packing list I put together. It includes many of the things my family has found to be super helpful on beach trips through the years.
Staying Near Beach Access Roads
One thing many first-time visitors don’t realize is that Port Aransas beaches are mostly accessed by road rather than hotels sitting directly on the sand. That’s why many visitors look for vacation rentals near the numbered beach access roads. Some of the most commonly used access points include:
- Beach Access Road 1: between Palmilla Beach Resort and Sunflower Beach
- Beach Access Road 1A: near the airport, between Stripes and The Texan gas stations
- Beach Access Road 1B: newly opened in March 2026, south of Cinnamon Shore North
- Beach Access Road 2: just north of Mustang Island State Park
If you stay near one of these access road areas, it’s easy to:
- load your beach chairs and insulated cooler into the car
- drive straight onto the sand
- set up for the day
- easily run back to your rental if you forget something
This layout is part of what makes Port Aransas unique compared to many other beach destinations. Being able to drive onto the beach means families tend to carry more gear and stay longer during the day.

Newer South End Communities
In the southern part of Port Aransas, you’ll find several newer resort-style vacation communities. These areas feel a little different from the older parts of Port Aransas. Many are designed as planned coastal neighborhoods with shared amenities, like:
- large resort-style pools
- restaurants or cafés on property
- community walking paths
- private boardwalks to the beach
- on-property bike rentals
These neighborhoods can feel like a self-contained beach resort, which many families with children of all ages enjoy.
A few things to keep in mind
The main difference is that these areas sit farther from the main part of Port Aransas, so going out to dinner or exploring shops usually requires a short drive. Since these resort communities are located further south on Highway 361 (still on Mustang Island), golf cart access to town is only available via the beach.
For some visitors, these things are actually a plus because the atmosphere tends to be quieter and slightly less busy, especially during vacation season.
Residential Neighborhood Rentals
Another option visitors sometimes overlook is renting a house in one of the residential neighborhoods around town. These areas often feel more relaxed than large condo complexes and can offer more space if you’re traveling with a big group (or a dog).
Many homes include things like:
- outdoor patios or decks
- full kitchens
- parking for multiple vehicles
- extra space for kids to spread out
The trade-off is that these homes are usually not within walking distance of the beach, so you’ll likely drive to the sand each day, whether by car or by golf cart. But for larger families or multi-family trips, the extra space and privacy can make the trip much more comfortable.

Golf Cart-Friendly Areas

Golf carts are a big part of the Port Aransas experience, and they can be SO much fun. Many visitors rent one for the weekend because it makes getting around town easy and exciting —especially for short trips to the beach or dinner. So you may want to plan your rental around an area that is golf cart-accessible to the beach.
You’ll see golf carts cruising around much of town (excluding Highway 361 — check local laws), but they’re most common in:
- in-town neighborhoods
- condo areas near the beach
- planned vacation communities
Using a golf cart can make it easy to:
- run to breakfast in the morning (see my restaurant guide for my top breakfast spots)
- head to the beach without moving your car (or getting sand in the car)
- explore town with your family and kids
Staying Close to the Beach

A quick tip many first-time visitors don’t realize: most Port Aransas beaches are accessed by roads, not hotels sitting directly on the sand.
So instead of searching for “beachfront hotels,” it’s better to stay near a beach access road, or choose a condo complex with a boardwalk to the beach. This makes getting to the water much easier.

Tips for Families Visiting Port Aransas
If you’re traveling with kids, knowing a few location details about Port Aransas can make your trip much easier. Many families prefer staying somewhere with:
- a pool for afternoon swims
- easy beach access
- nearby casual restaurants
- golf cart friendly streets
One thing I know is that kids love having a pool option after the beach. Sometimes the waves or wind pick up in the afternoon, and having a place to swim nearby keeps everyone happy. Just be sure you have packed all the right essentials.
It’s also helpful to stay somewhere within a short drive of the grocery store, breakfast spots, or ice cream shops. Those quick trips happen more often than you might expect on a beach vacation.

A few beach packing tips to make your stay easier
Where you stay often determines how much beach gear you’ll want to bring for the beach.
If you’re driving onto the beach, it’s easy to bring chairs, umbrellas, and coolers. If you’re walking from a condo, it helps to keep things a little lighter.
Some items that make beach days much easier:
- a beach wagon for hauling gear
- a shade canopy or beach tent
- an lightweight insulated cooler
- extra-large sand-proof beach towels

Final thoughts on where to stay in Port Aransas

There isn’t one perfect place to stay in Port A. The best area of the city really depends on what kind of trip you’re planning.
- If you want walkable restaurants, shops and nightlife, staying in town is a great option.
- If your goal is easy beach access and condo pools, the central beachfront areas are hard to beat.
- And if you’re looking for a quieter resort-style experience, the newer communities on the south side of town can be a great fit.
The good news is that Port Aransas is big enough to have everything you need, but also small enough that nothing is very far away.
Once you’re here, most days tend to follow a pretty simple rhythm: morning on the beach, lunch somewhere casual in town, maybe a pool break in the afternoon, and seafood or tacos for dinner. I laid out what I’d suggest in my 3 Days in Port Aransas: A Simple Itinerary for First-Time Visitors.
That’s the kind of trip Port A does best.
