How the Port Aransas Ferry Works

Ferry landing in Port Aransas

If it’s your first time taking the ferry in Port A, here’s what to expect:

  • The ferry runs 24/7
  • It’s completely FREE
  • No reservations are required — first come, first served
  • You stay in your car during the ride
  • Crossing takes about 5–10 minutes
  • Pedestrians, cars, vans and RVs are allowed
    • Maximum vehicle dimensions are 80′ long, 13′ wide, and 13′ 6″ high. Maximum overall weight is 80,000 lbs.

Multiple boats run at once, which helps keep things moving — even when it looks backed up, the lines are moving consistently.

Once you arrive, don’t head straight to the beach without grabbing your Port Aransas Beach Parking Permit (Cost, Where to Buy & Tips). You don’t want to be parked on the sand without one.

But wait, before you pack…

Don’t arrive at the beach and WISH you had packed something important. Know before you go with my Ultimate Port Aransas Beach Packing Checklist.

The ferry connects from Aransas Pass and takes you across the ship channel to Mustang Island and the city of Port Aransas. It’s the main way to drive onto the island from the north.

When leaving Port Aransas, you’ll simply follow the same path back across to Aransas Pass.

📍 Just follow your GPS to:

You’ll see plenty of signs as you get closer — you really can’t miss it.

When Ferry Wait Times Get REALLY Long

The ferry is an experience and many visitors (and locals) access Mustang Island and Port Aransas via the ferry throughout the year. You can expect serious delays during:

  • Spring break (March)
  • Summer weekends (June–August)
  • Holiday weekends
  • Major fishing tournaments/events

During these times, ferry lines can stretch far back and wait times can exceed 1–2 hours. So be prepared by checking the live feed above to plan your arrival and departure time.

Smart Tips to Avoid Ferry Delays

Ferry in Port Aransas

These are the kind of tips you only learn after a few trips across the ship channel on the ferry.

1. Time your arrival strategically

Avoid peak travel windows (see above). This is the #1 factor.

2. Check traffic before you go

Check the live feed above for the current wait time and webcam views of the lines (search for Hwy. 361) at the Aransas Pass ferry landing AND the Port Aransas ferry landing.

3. Have snacks + drinks ready

If you’re traveling with young children, plan ahead to have a few snacks and drinks available in your car. It’s a good idea for travelers of all ages, but especially if you have kids — this can save your sanity.

I put together a great guide to help you avoid forgetting the important stuff when planning your beach trip — the Ultimate Port Aransas Beach Packing List (+ a free printable checklist).

4. Use the wait time wisely

  • Stretch your legs
  • Watch dolphins (yes, really 🐬)
  • Enjoy the coastal views

5. Be patient — the line moves faster than it looks

Spring and Summer are very busy seasons in Port Aransas, with lots of people visiting Mustang Island every week. But the ferry operations are quite efficient and even long lines tend to keep moving steadily.
