If you’ve ever wanted your kids to stare in awe at a sandcastle taller than your house…this is your weekend. Every April, the Texas SandFest in Port Aransas turns the city into one giant beachside art show. It’s part festival, part beach day, part “wow, how did they even do that with sand?”

It’s also windy. And busy. And slightly chaotic in a way that can either feel magical…or mildly overwhelming. The difference? A little planning.

This guide will help you show up feeling like you know what you’re doing—even if it’s your first time. Here’s exactly how to do it right with kids—what to expect, what to bring, and how to avoid the common mistakes that festival-goers often make.

What is Texas SandFest, really?

At its core, SandFest in Port Aransas is a massive sand sculpture competition where professional artists create insanely detailed sculptures right on the beach in Port Aransas. Proceeds from the event benefit local non profit groups in the area.

Professional sand sculptors from around the world create massive sculptures over a few days, and you get to walk through and see them up close. There are also amateur competitions (these are surprisingly entertaining), food vendors, live music, and a kids’ activity area — but the sculptures are the main event.

We’re talking about:

  • 10+ foot tall sculptures
  • Tiny carved details that don’t seem physically possible with sand
  • Designs that make your kids immediately want to go build something (they won’t get close, but the enthusiasm is cute)

It’s like walking through an outdoor art museum…except you’re barefoot, holding a lemonade, and loving the live music.

When is the next SandFest?

The Texas SandFest in Port Aransas is set for April 17–19, 2026. Spring is the perfect season for the event, where we’re long past the chilly days of winter and well before the hotter days of summer.

Here’s how the weekend typically feels:

  • Friday: Early in the event weekend, best for families who want space to breathe and a slower pace at the event, but sculptures are just being plotted
  • Saturday: The main event (and the biggest crowds), lots of live music, food and shopping
  • Sunday: Slightly calmer but still lively, sculptures fully finished, great for photos

If you’re local or flexible, Friday morning is the hidden gem and the calmest day but sculptures will be in their beginning stages, far from complete. Saturday is peak everything and always very well-attended as sculptors are refining their creations. Sunday is a nice middle ground with slightly smaller crowds and fully finished sculptures to admire and photograph. They’re pretty impressive!

Tickets (get them early)

SandFest 2019 | PortAransasTex.com

Your ticket is a wristband (for adults and kids) and you’ll need it for entry, which will typically cover all three days. Plan to buy your tickets in advance to avoid standing in line in the hot sun the day you arrive.

You can buy tickets online through the SandFest website.

Trust me when I say… SandFest in Port Aransas is not a “pop in for an hour” situation. Between walking, watching, shopping, snacking, enjoying the live music and kids playing in the sand, you’ll want to plan at LEAST half a day.

Why families love SandFest (and keep coming back)

Texas SandFest 2019 in Port Aransas | www.portaransastex.com

There’s something about combining sand art + a sunny beach + carnival food that just works in Port A. Even if your kids only care about the sculptures for 20 minutes, they’re instantly entertained again once they’re digging in the sand or running toward the water.

The Kids Corner gives the little kids something hands-on to do in the sand, and the constant movement of the event keeps things from feeling stale. Lots to see, the smell of fair food, live music in the air… it’s exciting and fun.

Also — and this matters — you’re not stuck in one place. If your family’s attention spans fade, you can easily pivot and move to a different area with new things to see and do. You can always exit the event and walk straight to the water (this is where having a good beach wagon really helps). That flexibility is everything with kids at the beach.

Real talk: what they don’t tell you about SandFest

SandFest 2019 in Port Aransas | www.portaransastex.com

Let’s just set expectations properly so you don’t get blindsided…

Buy your ticket early online (more than a week ahead of time). The line to buy tickets at the event is LONG and always takes longer than you think. Save yourself the wait time and buy yours ahead of time, so you can skip ahead to the “Will Call” line and proceed in much faster.

Parking is on the beach, plentiful and packed — it can feel like a strategy game, honestly. You will need a beach parking permit, available at Lowe’s Market grocery and most convenience stores. Go early to the event for the best parking, and pack your patience.

It’s windy. Not “light breeze.” More like “hold onto your hat” windy. You can not set up shade tents inside the fenced SandFest grounds, but you can bring folding beach chairs and a handheld umbrella for shade while you walk.

It’s sunny and potentially very hot. I’ve seen years where April weather brings overcast skies or possibly 90-degree temps, and the only shade is at the music area. So plan ahead with a good wide-brim hat and bring extra water-resistant sunscreen (I love this dry-touch version, sand doesn’t stick to you).

It’s crowded — especially Saturday. Think lots of beach-lovers with spring break energy, live music and the smell of corn dogs in the air… but with more strollers and wagons.

Only service dogs are allowed so if you typically bring your dog with you to the beach, you’ll have to make other plans for them that day (this is a new rule for 2026).

You will walk a lot of steps. The event itself spans about 1/2 mile, and you may walk that far just to get to the entrance and back to your car. Be prepared with comfortable walking shoes and a sturdy beach wagon for little ones to ride in.

And sand will end up everywhere. Your bag, your car, your snacks, somehow your phone case.

None of this is a dealbreaker. It just means you need to show up prepared for some sandy fun!

How to do SandFest the smart way

SandFest 2019 | PortAransasTex.com

This is where a little SandFest strategy makes a big difference in how much you enjoy the event.

Arrive early (this is my biggest tip!)

Before 10am is an ideal time to arrive for the event. You’ll get easier parking, smaller crowds, and cooler temperatures.

Pick a meet up point

When you first arrive, pick a place or area where everyone in your group can return to if you get separated. This keeps you from wandering around, wondering where to meet up.

Plan your walk-through

Don’t zig-zag aimlessly through the SandFest grounds (you’ll burn out fast). Do one full loop of sculptures and shopping tents, then relax with some food and live music. Locate the restrooms early, so you’ll know where they are when you need them.

Bring cash and cards

Some vendors are small businesses and may only take cash; others may prefer only credit cards. Be prepared with both, but know that there will be an ATM on site.

LOCAL TIP: I will say this… the last time I was there, the on-site ATM ran out of cash on that busy Saturday. So come prepared.

Build in breaks before you need them

It will be hot and it can be a long day. If you wait until the kids are melting down, you waited too long. It’s bound to be a warm weekend in mid-to-late April, so plan ahead for a snack, cold drink and a break in the shade. See my top beach must-haves in my The Ultimate Port Aransas Beach Packing List.

Leave while it’s still fun

This is the secret to wanting to come back next year. Call it a day before everyone is truly spent and worn out. The long walk back to the parking area will have you all ready for some much-needed air-conditioning (and maybe ice cream).

LOCAL TIP: If you’re planning to stay overnight, where you stay in town makes taking a beach break MUCH easier. Here’s what you need to know: Where to Stay in Port Aransas (From Someone Who Spends a Lot of Time Here).

Where to stay (close to SandFest)

If you’re coming in for SandFest weekend, proximity is everything. Being able to go back to your rental for lunch, naps, or just a break from the wind is a game-changer—especially with younger kids.

You’ll want to look for a rental with:

  • Easy beach access or near beach access roads
  • Golf cart-friendly areas
  • Walkable or short drive to the event zone

What to bring to SandFest (these will make your day)

SandFest 2019 in Port Aransas | www.portaransastex.com

You don’t need to bring everything to SandFest in Port Aransas. But the right few things make this day 10x easier. This is NOT your average “throw a towel in a bag” kind of beach day. A little preparation beforehand makes the difference between a long day at SandFest…and a really good one.

The non-negotiables

Seating (folding chairs or a sand-proof blanket that actually works)
You can bring in folding chairs, but can only set them up in areas that won’t impede traffic flow. You’ll want somewhere comfortable to sit while kids play in the Kids Corner or Lesson Mountain. I prefer the backpack-style beach chairs that are easy to carry, or a beach wagon to pull them in.

Water + snacks
It will be warm. Lines get long. But hungry kids + long lines = not ideal. Pack an insulated water bottle and snacks to keep everyone happy.

Something to manage the wind
Think wide-brim hats, hair clips/ties, or anything that keeps your hair from flying around.

My family’s go-to SandFest gear (the stuff that actually helps)

These are the items I see families using every single year—the ones that quietly turn a stressful day into a really good one.

Beach wagon
If you have kids, you’ll thank yourself for bringing a beach-worthy wagon. Hauling chairs, snacks, and tired children is a lot easier with a wagon that rolls easily on the sand. Makes hauling everything (and tired kids) much easier.

Portable fan or misting fan
It sounds dramatic, but this can be the difference between “we’re having fun” and “we need to leave now.” Feels like a luxury until you realize it’s not.

  • Why I love it: Sometimes you just need to make your own breeze, up close. It has 3 speeds and also acts as a flashlight and backup power bank.

Handheld Portable Fan

Soft-sided insulated cooler with drinks and snacks
Lines get long. Having your own cold stash keeps everyone happy and saves money. Snacks + cold drinks without constant vendor lines = happy family.

  • Why I love this: SandFest is a pedestrian event on a fenced section of the beach, not a spread out and set up for the day kind of place. Having a backpack cooler makes it easy to keep your drinks with you and keep them cold.
Yeti Insulated Backpack Cooler | Port Aransas Explorer

Insulated water bottles
Hydration is not optional out here. You’ll go through more water than you think.

Baby wipes (even if you don’t have a baby)
Hands, faces, feet, sticky situations—you’ll use them constantly. Even if your kids are older. Trust me.

Lightweight chairs
Somewhere comfortable to sit while the kids play or while you take in the sculptures. A well-made beach chair with backpack straps is worth its weight in gold!

SandFest food strategy (because hunger sneaks up on people)

SandFest 2018 | Port Aransas Explorer

There are plenty of food vendors at SandFest in Port Aransas, and they’re good. But food lines get long fast, especially around lunch so plan to get in line early or eat at “off-peak” times.

The smartest move is to:

  • Bring a few snacks and drinks in an insulated backpack cooler *my fave option*
    • Why I love this cooler bag: it has a simple magnetic closure and keeps drinks really cold, plus the straps are comfortable and it’s easy to wear.
  • Grab a fun meal from the fair vendors — because hello… corn dogs. How can you not?

My family has tried a lot of ways to transport snacks and drinks, and by far the easiest is a backpack cooler. I freeze 2 bottles of water the night before to use as “ice packs”. You may also want to pack an insulated water bottle with ice and your favorite drink too.

This way you’re not stuck waiting in the food vendor lines with already-hungry kids (a situation that rarely improves with time or heat).

How to make SandFest fun for your kids

Kids at SandFest 2018 | Port Aransas Explorer

Give the kids a SandFest “job”:

  • Explore Lesson Mountain where the kids can get a quick sand sculpting lesson.
  • Take your littles ones to the Kids Corner for games and face-painting.
  • Bring their own digital camera to take their own photos (it’s SO fun to see what they capture).
  • Let them “judge” their favorite sculptures.
  • Have them come up with names or stories for what they see.
  • Bring a small sand toy kit so they can build their own creations nearby.

And don’t underestimate how much they’ll love the Kids Corner. It’s always so much fun.

Making it fun for you (very important)

SandFest 2018 in Port Aransas | www.portaransastex.com

If you’re the type to photograph everything on your trip for the memories (or sharing on social media), SandFest in Port Aransas is actually a great content weekend.

If you enjoy posting photos on social media or documenting trips and events, the Texas SandFest will give you tons of great shots to share, like impressive sand sculptures, live music on stage, carnival-style food, market-style shopping tents, and of course… the beautiful beach.

The sand sculptures are incredible on their own, but the real photo magic is:

  • Time-lapse videos of artists working
  • Fun family photo ops throughout the event
  • Before/after shots (take pics on Saturday morning, then again Sunday afternoon)
  • Sunset photos with the sculptures
  • Kids reacting to their favorites

If you share, tag me @portaransastex — I love seeing how everyone experiences SandFest.

The biggest mistakes to avoid at SandFest

  1. Not bringing a wide-brim hat. This is the number one regret I hear others say.
  2. Arriving at peak midday on Saturday and expecting a relaxed experience.
  3. Trying to stay too long without breaks with little ones. We once stayed way too long with the kids on a Saturday afternoon in the hot sun… learn from me and wrap up your day BEFORE everyone is “so done“.
  4. Overpacking to the point you dread carrying everything (tip: bring a beach wagon).
  5. Getting dehydrated (tip: bring extra water and flavored rehydration packets). See my top picks for after-sun care in my The Ultimate Port Aransas Beach Packing List.

Is Texas SandFest worth it for families?

SandFest 2018 in Port Aransas | www.portaransastex.com

Yes, absolutely — with the right expectations. If you go to SandFest thinking it’s a quick, easy outing, you’ll be frustrated.

If you treat it like a beach day with an incredible bonus (giant sand art everywhere), it’s one of the most memorable weekends you’ll have in Port A. Set reasonable expectations and have a great time!

Final tip

SandFest is one of those events that can feel like a lot… or it can feel like one of the best weekends of your spring. The difference isn’t luck. It’s just knowing how to do it.

Show up a little early, bring the right stuff, take breaks, and leave before you’re completely worn out. Do that, and you’ll already be planning a trip next year before you even get the sand out of your car.
