When you think of a small beachside city with a sand-sculpting competition on the beach, Port Aransas, Texas, should be the first place that comes to mind. The Texas SandFest in Port Aransas is an annual island tradition that began in 1997 and has grown every year since.

If you’re thinking about where to stay for SandFest in Port Aransas, there’s one thing that catches a lot of people off guard. Places to stay book up fast.

The huge influx of crowds for the event often causes visitors to scramble for last-minute accommodations, with rental homes and condos closest to the beach being in high demand.

SandFest is one of the biggest events of the year on the Texas coast, and thousands of people travel to Port Aransas for the weekend to see the massive sand sculptures, live music, and beach festival atmosphere. Rentals will sell out quickly.

Because of that, the earlier you plan your trip, the easier it is to find a great place to stay close to the action. If you want a full overview of the event itself, start here:

But if you’re planning a trip around the event, here’s what to know about where to stay and why booking early makes such a difference.

Why SandFest weekend fills up quickly

Texas SandFest in Port Aransas | Port Aransas Explorer

Unlike a typical beach weekend, SandFest draws a much larger crowd. Visitors come from all over Texas and beyond to experience what has become one of the largest sand sculpting festivals in the country.

That means demand for accommodations increases quickly in the weeks leading up to the event. Hotels, vacation rentals, and beachfront condos are often the first to go, especially those within easy driving distance of the beach where SandFest takes place.

If you’re planning to attend, booking early usually means:

  • better location options
  • more choices in rental size and price
  • less stress trying to find something last minute

Waiting too long can leave you with limited choices or properties farther away from the beach.

LOCAL TIP: Planning to visit SandFest in April? Accommodations in Port Aransas fill quickly during this weekend. Booking early gives you more options close to the beach and better pricing.

Staying close to the beach makes the weekend easier

SandFest takes place directly on the beach in Port Aransas, and staying nearby can make the entire experience much more relaxed.

When you’re close to the beach, it’s easier to:

  • arrive earlier in the day before crowds build
  • take breaks between activities
  • avoid heavy traffic leaving the event

If you want to walk to SandFest

SandFest is located on the beach between Beach Markers 13-17, so walking from your condo or rental home is totally doable. Look for rentals with boardwalks straight to the beach, like:

  • Palmilla Beach
Walkable to the beach, near the south end of the event
  • Sandcastle Resort
Close to the action, walkable to the beach, amazing pool area, located near the north end of the event
  • BeachGate
  • Island Retreat
    Walkable to the beach

Many visitors choose vacation home rentals or condos so they have more space and a place to relax between trips to the beach. I break down the best areas to stay in Port A in this helpful guide: Where to Stay in Port Aransas (From Someone Who Spends a Lot of Time Here).

If you want to drive to SandFest

Parking is available forSandFest in beach parking lots and off-site parking lots around town. Cars and golf carts park in the same lots, and oversized vehicles won’t be allowed in the beach parking lots (space will be tight). If you want to drive to the event, these are a few great places to stay nearby:

  • The Dunes Condominiums
Beachfront resort, located near the north entrance to the event. View the Dunes live beach webcam here.
  • Cinnamon Shore
Easily accessible via golf cart by driving down the beach, several large pools in neighborhood-style resort, located south of the event

If you’re traveling with family or friends, a condo or rental home can also make the trip more comfortable than a standard hotel room. Having trouble deciding which is best? Grab my Port Aransas Rental Decision Guide (+ printable rental checklist).

What to look for in a SandFest weekend rental

When you’re booking a place to stay for SandFest, a few features can make the weekend smoother. Look for properties that offer:

  • easy beach access
  • parking space for multiple vehicles
  • enough room for beach gear and coolers
  • comfortable outdoor space for relaxing after the event

Many visitors spend most of their day on the beach and then return to their rental in the evening to relax, cook dinner, or enjoy the coastal breeze. Having a comfortable place to return to makes the weekend feel less rushed.

Vacation rentals are popular for SandFest

Vacation homes and condos tend to be especially popular during SandFest weekend. For visitors staying multiple nights, rentals often create a more relaxed trip than moving in and out of crowded hotels.

They offer:

  • more space for families or groups
  • kitchens and living areas
  • easy access to the beach

Some rentals are within walking or short driving distance of the beach areas where SandFest sculptures and vendors are located. Booking early gives you a better chance of finding those convenient locations.

Plan your arrival ahead of time

Another reason people like staying overnight during SandFest weekend is that travel into Port Aransas can take longer than usual. Visitors coming from the mainland often arrive via the ferry, and wait times can increase during busy parts of the day.

If you’re driving in for the event, it’s helpful to check this before you go: Port Aransas Ferry Wait Time (Live Updates + Best Times to Go).

Arriving earlier in the day can help avoid the busiest times on SandFest weekend.

Parking near the beach is usually available, but it will be busy, take patience and it helps to be prepared. If you plan to park on the beach during the event, you’ll need a beach parking permit.

You can learn more about that here: Port Aransas Beach Parking Permit (Cost, Where to Buy & Tips ). Knowing the basics ahead of time makes arrival much easier.

What to bring for a comfortable day at SandFest

You’ll likely spend several hours exploring the sculptures, listening to music, and enjoying the beach.

A few simple things will make the day much more comfortable:

  • a backpack-style beach chair
  • drinks and snacks in a cooler
  • sunscreen and beach essentials

LOCAL TIP: SandFest does not allow shade canopies or beach umbrellas inside the event grounds. Plan to bring a battery-operated fan or a wind-proof handheld umbrella.

You can focus on enjoying the sculptures, exploring the event, and spending a great day on the beach. If you’re still deciding what to do once you arrive, this guide can help: What to Do at SandFest: 10 Activities You Shouldn’t Miss.

What to do at SandFest

SandFest 2019 | PortAransasTex.com

There are so many awesome activities to enjoy on the sand at the Texas SandFest like amateur sand-sculpting, watching the master sand sculptors at work, kids activities (like an inflatable water slide in years’ past), shopping the arts and crafts vendors, eating from the food trucks and rotating live music.

Just be sure to wear comfortable shoes, a wide-brim hat and bring extra sunscreen, because I’ve never seen a vendor selling sunscreen there.

Admission wristbands can be purchased online in advance or at either of the two entrances. Proceeds from SandFest benefit local nonprofit groups in Port Aransas. So it’s a win-win!

Where to find the event

The Texas SandFest is held in Port Aransas, Texas, located on the northern part of Mustang Island, between Beach Markers 13-17. The annual event is held on the beach with special event parking available on the beach too.

Parking lots on the beach fill up early in the mornings, so look for ways to walk or bike to the beach if you can. We love our beach cruiser bikes for getting around town easily.

The event spans quite a bit of beach which means lots of walking. Many families bring pull-along beach wagons for little ones to relax in (this wagon with all-terrain tires and cupholders looks awesome!).
