If you’re thinking about spending Memorial Day weekend in Port Aransas, you’re not alone — it’s one of the most popular times of year to visit. The weather is warm (but not quite peak summer brutal yet), the water temperature is starting to warm up, and it’s that unmistakable shift into “okay, it’s officially summer now”.
But I’ll be real with you — it is a busy weekend… and a little planning can make a big difference between a smooth, relaxing trip… and one that feels more stressful than it should, like:
- sitting in traffic longer than expected
- waiting forever for food because you didn’t think about timing your meals
- or showing up to the beach mid-day and realizing every good spot is taken
None of it is a big deal… but it adds up. So here’s everything I’d tell a friend planning to spend Memorial Day weekend in Port Aransas — what to do, how to avoid the crowds, and how to actually enjoy your time here on Mustang Island.

Before we get into it, it’s worth saying:
While Memorial Day weekend is often seen as the kickoff to summer, it’s also a time to honor those who have served. It’s a quieter, more reflective kind of holiday, which is worth keeping in mind as part of the weekend too.

If you only remember one thing: start your beach days early and take a break from the afternoon heat.
The Best Way to Spend Memorial Day Weekend: do the beach first

Unlike the 4th of July, there’s no one “main event” here like fireworks or a parade. For Memorial Day weekend, the beach is the draw.
In addition to praying for good weather, here’s what I’d plan to do…
- Get out there to the beach early (8–9 AM)
- Set up your spot for the day
- Stay through mid-day, then head in to cool off or grab a late lunch
- Come back out to the beach for sunset
This laid back rhythm at the beach makes the whole weekend feel easier. Not sure which beach access road is closest, or best for your plans? Read my guide to the Best Beaches in Port Aransas: Local Guide to Beach Access, Driving & Family Spots.
If you need ideas for a good spot to watch the sunset, I have done the work for you… Watching the sunset over the sand dunes from the beach is beautiful and the sky takes on colors you won’t believe. But if you’re not looking to get sandy again after dinner, here’s a few of the best sunset viewing spots around town that I highly recommend.

Things to Do Beyond the Beach
I totally get it, you’re coming to Port Aransas for the beach. And it’s the best place in town to be on Memorial Day weekend, no doubt. You’ve got the sun, the sand, and hopefully some great weather.
But if you want to mix things up, there’s plenty to do in Port Aransas without overpacking your schedule. Here’s a few of my top picks…
Dolphin Watching Tours

Who doesn’t love to see dolphins? Easy, fun, and great for your family (especially if you’re visiting for the for first-time).
Several local boat operators in town offer dolphin watching tours. Most last about 1.5 – 2 hours and cost $35-60, depending on the size and type of boat. These tours are very popular on holiday weekends, like Memorial Day, so booking ahead is a good idea.
- Fisherman’s Wharf: Dolphin Watching Tour or Sunset Cruise
- Neptune Charters: The Original Dolphin Watch Nature Tour & Shrimp Trawl
My kids liked seeing the dolphins, but the absolute highlight for them is the live touch tank on the boat where they can get their hands wet with whatever comes up in the net. - The Scarlet Lady: Dolphin Adventure Tours & Sunset Dolphin Adventure Tours
Departing from Deep Sea Headquarters, this is a popular dolphin cruise with great views of the Lydia Ann Lighthouse in the ship channel.
Fishing Charters

Fishing is the sweet spot in Port Aransas. Deep sea fishing trips and bay fishing are both offered by most all charters, and the length of trip can vary from 3-60 hours. It’s a perfect off-beach activity if you want something a little more active.
- Bay fishing → more relaxed day trips
- Deep sea → full offshore experience for hours or days
- Find your perfect charter fishing trip with Fisherman’s Wharf, Deep Sea Headquarters, or Dolphin Dock
Watersports Time

Memorial Day weekend is big for getting out on the water, and it doesn’t have to involve fishing. There’s a variety of other ways to enjoy the water in Port A:
- Rent jetskis, kayaks or stand-up paddle boards with Gettin’ Salty Watersports
- Try parasailing with Chute ‘Em Up Parasail
- Rent bicycles for the day from Island Surf Rentals
Golf Cart Cruising
This is one of those simple, but most fun things people end up loving when in Port Aransas. There’s just something about hopping on the cart are cruising down the street with some of your favorite tunes playing. Ahh if that doesn’t say summer, I’m not sure what does.
Where to Eat Over Memorial Day Weekend
After a full day at the beach in Port A, a good meal is high priority. The good things is… there is no shortage of great places to eat in town, depending only on the vibe you’re looking for.
Prefer a casual family dinner with a waterfront view? Or an elevated meal with a fine dining menu? Port Aransas has both and and everything in between.
What I’d do:
- Plan ahead to eat early (before 5:30 pm) to avoid the long wait for a table
or - Go eat out somewhere casual with fast service (like Grumble’s Seafood or Pizzeria Port A)
or - Grab food to-go and take your food to the beach or back to your rental to enjoy

Don’t Skip Sunset

Sunsets at the beach are stunning. Watching the sun slowly set over the sand dunes is a great way to end a relaxing day on the sand. It’s is one of the best parts of the entire weekend.
Just head to the beach, bring some folding chairs or a beach blanket, sit back and relax… and enjoy the show in the sky.
- MY TOP PICK: Sportbrella Backpack Beach Chair ( + Portable Table)
- Why I love it: it’s a well-built beach chair made with durable nylon fabric that I love using, it folds up easily and has a cupholder and storage on the back large enough to hold a towel, drink, sunscreen and more.
- ANOTHER OPTION I LOVE: Genovega Waterproof Sandproof Beach Blanket
- Why it’s a great choice: I love the look of it — bold, nautical stripes and it’s easy to carry with a strap and handle. It’s waterproof and can even double as a car or golf cart blanket.

What to Bring for Memorial Day Weekend at the Beach

Where to Stay for Memorial Day Weekend in Port Aransas
Memorial Day weekend books up quickly in Port Aransas, so if you find a place you like, it’s worth reserving early.
A quick tip many first-time visitors don’t realize: most Port Aransas beaches are accessed by side roads, not hotels sitting directly on the sand.
So instead of searching for “beachfront hotels,” it’s better to stay near a beach access road, or choose a condo complex with a boardwalk to the beach. This makes getting to the water much easier.
You’ll want to look for:
- Easy access from your rental to nearby beach access roads
- Plenty of parking for your vehicles (important on busy weekends)
- Proximity to town and restaurants

If you keep your plans simple, start your days early, and build in time to just enjoy the beach, you’ll end up with the kind of weekend people come back for every year.
The thing about Memorial Day weekend in Port Aransas is that it’s not really about doing more — it’s about doing less, but doing it smart.

- a good beach setup
- a loose plan for meals
- and enough flexibility to just go with the flow
Because the best parts of the weekend usually aren’t the big, planned moments anyway. It’s the in-between stuff — sitting under your shade tent with a breeze finally kicking in, watching the sky change at sunset, grabbing easy takeout and realizing it was the better choice all along.
If you can keep things simple, start your days a little earlier, you’ll end up with the kind of weekend that actually feels like a break. And once you’ve done Memorial Day in Port A this way, you’ll get why people come back for it every year.
