If you’re planning a Memorial Day weekend in Port Aransas and trying to figure out what your days should actually look like, this is the kind of weekend where you want a relaxed schedule with the flexibility to change it up, if the day’s plan shifts gears.

Port A over Memorial Day weekend with your friendly is more about getting into a relaxing rhythm than checking things off a list. Think slow mornings, long beach stretches, taking a break before you overheat, and just letting the day play out a little.

That said, having a loose plan makes a big difference — especially on a busy weekend when being unprepared (like underestimating your beach setup) can turn into a hassle fast.

So this isn’t a strict itinerary. It’s more like… if I were you, here’s how I’d map out the weekend so it feels easy, relaxed, and actually fun from start to finish. Minimal meltdowns + maximum sand between your toes.

Overall Weekend Vibe

When you’re heading to Port Aransas for Memorial Day weekend, the goal isn’t to plan every minute. It’s to have just enough of a plan that things feel easy — and then leave room to actually enjoy being there. This isn’t a “rush around and check everything off” kind of trip.

Day 1 – Saturday: Arrive + Ease Into It

Afternoon: Rental Check-In + Beach

If you can, try to arrive in Port A earlier in the day. Even getting in a couple hours earlier can make the whole first day feel easier. Later afternoon is when traffic onto the island slows down, rental check-ins stack up, and everything starts to feel a little more crowded.

  • Drop your bags
  • Pick up your golf cart (if you reserved one for the weekend)
  • Head straight to the beach

No full beach setup needed. Just get outside and unwind a bit.

First Stop: Beach for a Bit

Don’t try to do a full setup yet. Just walk out to the beach, get your feet in the sand, and let the trip actually start with some relaxation. This takes the pressure off when you just want to relax, and sets the tone for the laid-back weekend.

Before you spend time on the beach, be sure you and your family are familiar with The Complete Local’s Guide to Beach Safety on Port Aransas Beaches.

Dinner: Keep It Easy

This is where most people get stuck. First night rule in Port A: don’t overthink dinner. Here’s what I’d do:

  • Eat early (before 5:30)
    or
  • Grab takeout and head back to your place

If you wait until 6:30–7:00 pm, you’re likely going to be waiting at the restaurant while your stomach rumbles… and that’s not how you want to start your trip.

I created a really helpful guide for you… Here’s my top picks for the best places to dine in town, based on the vibe you’re looking for, what type of meal you want, and even my favorite breakfast and sweet spots for ice cream. Day 2 – Sunday: Full Beach Day + One Activity

This is your main day for enjoying the beach on this Memorial Day weekend. It’s time to get sandy, my friend. Let’s go! 🇺🇸

Morning: Beach Time (early is better)

If you do one thing right this weekend, let it be this… Get to the beach by 8-9 am or you’ll be circling for a spot by late morning.

Traffic on the beach will pick up by mid-morning, so arrive early to find your ideal spot on the sand. Show up late morning, and it’s a totally different experience. If you’re unsure of which beach area is best for your family, check out my Best Beaches in Port Aransas: Local Guide to Beach Access, Driving & Family Spots.

If you’re planning to stay out for a full beach day, this setup makes everything way easier (and way more comfortable).

  • Shade tent or canopy
  • Chairs
  • Cooler
  • Beach wagon
  • Portable fan

Be aware that we all share the water with wildlife, so here’s what you need to know about Rip Currents, Stingrays & Jellyfish: How to Stay Safe in Port Aransas Gulf Water.

This setup makes the biggest difference on a long beach day. I’ve got all my favorite beach essentials listed here for you: The Ultimate Port Aransas Beach Packing List (+ free checklist).

Local Tip: If the beach is packed, drive a bit further south on the beach to Beach Marker 24+ until you find a little more space.

Lunch: Keep It Simple

  • Pack something light for a beach picnic
  • Take a break from the heat and crowds to eat in your rental
  • Or grab quick takeout

You can stop wondering where to eat with my top picks here: Best Restaurants in Port Aransas (Local Favorites + Dining Guide).

Make an easy Picnic Lunch on the Beach

If you’re doing a full beach day, a lunch/cooler picnic setup makes everything easier.

Local Tip: If restaurants are slammed, switch to takeout if it’s available, and take your meal to the beach, the park, or back to your rental.

Afternoon: Break + Cool Off

This is where the beach gets really busy. So it’s a good time to take a break.

Around 2–4 pm, it’s a great time to head inside to cool off for a bit, rest and recharge. This is what keeps your day from feeling exhausting.

One piece of advice: if you leave the beach to grab food, do not leave your beach setup unattended. You’ll be quite upset if you find your cooler and chairs gone when you return (sadly, it happened to us and we learned our lesson).

Late Afternoon Activity (optional but so fun)

This is a great time to book something easy and low effort—especially if you want a break from the beach. If you want to do something extra, here’s my top picks for some easy wins for the weekend:

Dinner: Flexible Timing

Same rule for dining out applies here… Eat early or late, like before 5:30 or after 8:00pm to avoid the long restaurant wait times during peak dinner-hours. Don’t fight the 6-8pm dinner rush in Port A unless you’re okay waiting an hour+ for a table.

Evening: Slow it Down Again

After dinner, grab some ice cream from Desserted Island and head over to Roberts Point Park to walk around, let the kids enjoy the Turtle Cove playground, and take in the sunset from the waterfront.

Day 3 – Monday: Slow Morning + Head Home

Morning: Slow Start (but not too slow)

This is where people make the opposite mistake. They plan to leave town too slow… and then hit lines of traffic when leaving.

What I’d do: Grab coffee early + keep breakfast simple.

Head Out Before Midday

Traffic builds quickly on holiday weekends. Midday traffic leaving the island tends to back up quickly. My advice is to try to leave before late morning, or later in the afternoon.

Before you go, be sure to check the Ferry wait time here: Port Aransas Ferry Wait Time (Live Updates + Best Times to Go).

The Simple Game Plan (if you forget everything else)

If you keep it this Memorial Day weekend simple, you’ll be fine:

  • Go early to the beach
  • Take a break in the afternoon
  • Don’t wait until peak dinner time
  • Keep your schedule flexible

That’s really it.

My Thoughts

At the end of the day, this kind of weekend isn’t about doing everything — it’s about doing just enough that everything feels smooth.

If you start your mornings early, give yourself a break in the afternoon, and don’t lock yourself into anything too rigid, the whole trip just flows better. You’ll notice it, too.

You’re not rushing to beat crowds, you’re not stressed about where to eat, and you’re not completely worn out by the end of the day. You’re just… enjoying it.

And that’s really the goal here. Because the parts you’ll remember most probably won’t be anything you planned anyway. It’ll be the slower moments, the easy meals, the beach time that lasted longer than expected.

So use this as a guide, not a checklist. Keep it flexible, go a little slower than you think you need to, and you’ll end up with a weekend that actually feels like a relaxing break.
