Cinco de Mayo on the Texas coast hits different. In Port Aransas, you trade big-city crowds for Gulf breezes, live music, and salt-rimmed glasses clinking on dog-friendly patios.

Think beachy vibes, salty air, margaritas in hand, live music drifting in the background, and tacos that just taste better by the coast.

Here’s how to celebrate like a local on May 5th, plus the best spots for margaritas and a few pro tips to enjoy the fiesta.

Where to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Port A

1. La Playa Mexican Grille

La Playa Mexican Grille | Port Aransas Explorer
La Playa Mexican Grille

If you want the full Cinco de Mayo experience, this is Port A’s go-to. Seaside Mexican with 70+ tequilas behind the bar and “large house margaritas with a Cointreau topper” that regulars call “the best Mexican restaurant on the island”.

La Playa just celebrated 23 years in business, and live mariachi bands have been spotted walking in to kick off the party.

Margarita to try: House Margarita on the rocks

Local Tip: They’re only open evenings Tue-Sat 5pm-10pm. Go early and prepare for a wait.

2. San Juan Restaurant

Family-run taqueria with a cult following. They have reasonable prices, quick seating, and popular margaritas. It’s inexpensive, open 6am-9:45pm daily, and has a speedy drive-thru if you’re beaching it.

Margarita to try: Classic lime with their carne guisada

Local Tip: Go for breakfast steak & eggs, then come back for evening margs. Cash-friendly and zero pretension.

3. Cancun Mexican Restaurant

Located right on State Hwy 361, Cancun has a big menu and serves traditional burritos, cheese enchiladas, and margaritas at great prices. It’s a very popular spot for breakfast too. Open 6am-10pm daily.

Margarita to try: Frozen house marg, salt rim

Local Tip: Easy in-and-out if you’re headed in town on Hwy. 361. Or grab tacos to-go and hit the beach.

4. BierHaus Port Aransas

Bierhaus | Port Aransas Explorer

Not traditional Mexican, but locals love the coastal burger bar for its signature prickly pear margarita. They have a dog-friendly patio, live music, outdoor games, and swinging chairs.

Margarita to try: Prickly Pear Margarita

Local Tip: 11am-12am daily. Perfect post-beach stop. Kids can play while you sip.

5. Beach Bums Sports Bar

If you want sports with your salsa, Beach Bums is your spot. Their recent promos included $2 Margarita Monday and a Tuesday Cinco de Mayo Taco Bar starting at 6pm with a sombrero theme.

Margarita to try: Whatever’s $2

Local Tip: They show MLB and Spurs games. Check their Facebook for day-of specials.

6. Bron’s Beach Carts + DIY Beach Setup

Not a restaurant necessarily—but honestly one of the best ways to celebrate.

  • Rent a golf cart from Bron’s Beach Carts
  • Pick up tacos + margaritas to-go (yes, it’s a thing)
  • Head to the beach for your own Cinco de Mayo setup on the sand

Think: portable speaker, snacks, sunset, and zero crowds.

Tips for Celebrating Like You Live Here

  1. Start early, stay late: Most Mexican food spots open by 6am and run late. Brunch margs are a thing. La Playa is evenings-only, so plan for dinner there.
  2. Check for live music: La Playa had a full mariachi band walk in for their 23rd anniversary. BierHaus and Beach Bums may have live sets too. Follow restaurants on social media the week of May 5th.
  3. BYO shade hat: If you’re bar-hopping, it’s still Texas in May. Sunscreen and a hat save you by margarita #2.
  4. No official city event yet: As of May 4, no big public Cinco de Mayo events were listed for Port Aransas. The party is at the restaurants and bars.
  5. Parking & golf carts: Plenty of parking is available at each restaurant or take a golf cart between spots on Alister St., Beach St. and Cut Off Rd.

Make It a Weekend Trip

My Thoughts

Cinco de Mayo in Port Aransas isn’t about big crowds or packed schedules—it’s about good food, good drinks, and being outside by the water. That’s what makes it so good.

Cinco de Mayo falls on a Tuesday this year. That means “Taco Tuesday” specials stack with margarita deals. Order the beef taco + house marg combo and you’ve won Port Aransas.

Where are you celebrating? If you try the prickly pear at BierHaus or catch mariachi at La Playa, tell me which margarita had the best salt rim.

If you end up coming to the beach, grab a margarita, watch the sunset, and keep it simple + safe—you really can’t do this day wrong in Port A.
