Simple, Thankful Ways to Spend the Day with Mom

Sunrise at South Jetty
Get there 20 minutes before sunrise. No agenda. Just stand with Mom at the tip of Mustang Island as the Gulf turns pink. Let the quiet say what you’ve been meaning to say all year… grateful. Here’s my top tips for How to Savor the Sunrise at the South Jetty.

Beach walk at Mustang Island State Park
Stroll miles of protected shoreline for a peaceful stroll. The month of May means warm days, cooler breezes, and smaller crowds than summer. Bring a sandproof beach blanket. Look for dolphins. Tell her your favorite memories of her.

Sunset Sail or Dolphin Cruise
Give her the gift of “no planning.” Scarlet Lady Dolphin Adventures and Red Dragon Pirate Cruises run Mother’s Day cruises. Dolphins, sunset, and she doesn’t lift a finger.

Paint something special at Fire It Ceramics
Let Mom show you her creative side by painting her own ceramic figurine or dish. It’s a relaxing, conversation-provoking activity that’s fun for you and her.

Local Tip: Check the Port Aransas Live Webcams before you head out to catch the best view of the beach and water conditions.

Sunset at Roberts Point Park
End the day where cargo ships pass and the sky goes gold. The Keeler Observation Tower gives 360° views. It’s one of the best sunset spots on the island — and a beautiful place to say “thank you, Mom.” Here are a few more excellent sunset spots: Best Sunset Spots in Port Aransas (Local Favorite Views).

Pick up a sweet gift from Winton’s
Winton’s Island Candy has fresh homemade fudge daily. Grab some chocolate candies or saltwater taffy for mom to enjoy with breakfast in bed, or a slice of fresh fudge for a special treat. Simple, thoughtful, very Mom. Here’s what to expect at Winton’s: Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth at Winton’s Island Candy.

Spa Service or DIY it at the Beach House
Take her to Balinese Spa for a facial and massage. Or bring the spa to her. Pack hydrating face masks, a variety of nail polish, and a Bluetooth speaker. Set up on the deck with ocean sounds. Or book an in-room massage through your rental company.

Book a Private Sandcastle Lesson
Sandcastle Lessons by Mark Landrum does family lessons right on the beach. Surprise Mom by building her a “castle” — it’s hilarious, memorable, and she gets to boss everyone around.

Paint & Sip with a View
Port Aransas Art Center sometimes hosts Mother’s Day classes. If not, grab canvases and wine, set up on the beach at golden hour, and paint the sunset together. It’s a fun activity she’ll remember for years.

End the Day with a Sunset at Roberts Point Park

This is the move Mom will definitely love. Roberts Point Park overlooks the ship channel, and at sunset the massive cargo ships pass by as the sky goes full watercolor. There’s the Turtle Cove playground if grandkids are in town, benches for quiet moments, and the Keeler Observation Tower for 360° views.

Truth be told, it’s one of the best sunset spots on the island — and the perfect way to wrap up Mom’s day.

If You’re Making It a Weekend

May is one of the best months in Port A — warm, beautiful, and relaxed before summer hits (and the water is finally warm enough to swim in). If you’re booking a rental for Mother’s Day weekend, book it early. Beach houses and condos with Gulf views go first.

Need help choosing a place to stay? Here’s some helpful planning tips:

To the moms who packed all the snacks, who found the lost flip-flops, who sat through sunburns and sandstorms just to watch us play in the waves — this day is for you. Port Aransas will handle the view. You just show up and let her be celebrated.

Happy Mother’s Day, Port A style. 💐
